Out of the web platforms that are available the two biggest ones in my opinion are, WordPress and Wix, which stand out as popular choices.
While both platforms offer user-friendly interfaces and a range of features, looking closer at the two platforms WordPress holds a edge over Wix in several key aspects.
In this article, I will answer why WordPress is often considered the better choice when compared to Wix.
Table of Contents
Customization and Flexibility
One of the reasons why WordPress is ahead of Wix is its ability to offer more customization and flexibility.
WordPress is an open-source platform, which allows users access to the source code so can customize it to their needs.
Where as Wix is not open-source which means that it’s source code is not publicly available, and can’t be access by the user.
WordPress has a massive repository of themes and plugins, that users can choose from with a range of design options and functionalities to create a truly unique website.
On the other hand, Wix’s customization options are limited as its not open-source so new features will need to be added by Wix.
While it offers a drag-and-drop editor for simplicity, the customization possibilities are constrained, especially for users with more advanced design requirements.
WordPress, also has a big developer community, which gives users a lot of recourses to get help and support when creating a website that aligns with their vision.
As your website grows and evolves, scalability becomes a factor you start paying attention to.
WordPress does a good job in this area, providing a great foundation for websites of all sizes.
Whether you’re running a personal blog or managing a large e-commerce platform, WordPress can effortlessly scale to meet your needs.
Wix, while suitable for smaller websites, may encounter limitations as a site expands.
WordPress’s scalability is supported by its extensive ecosystem of plugins and themes, allowing users to add functionalities and features as their website grows.
With WordPress one consideration when scaling, you would need to take into account is your hosting plan as you may have to increase it to keep up with demand.
Ownership and Portability
When choosing a website platform, it’s essential to consider ownership and portability.
WordPress offers users complete control and ownership of their content.
Users can host their WordPress website on any server of their choice, providing the freedom to switch hosting providers or move their site as needed.
Wix, however, operates on a closed platform.
Users can only use Wix’s hosting services, making it challenging to migrate their website elsewhere if they need to.
Also, if Wix for some reason decided to shut its doors there goes your website and possibly your data.
Where as WordPress is open-source, so as long as you have a backup of your website, you wont lose it.
This lack of portability can be a big drawback for businesses or individuals who value the freedom to manage their hosting.
Search engine optimization (SEO) helps improve your website’s visibility online.
WordPress, has a SEO-friendly structure, offers tools and plugins needed to optimize content for search engines.
One of the most popular SEO plugin available on WordPress is RankMath SEO, which helps to manage and improve your website’s SEO performance.
Wix, while providing basic SEO features, it falls short when compared to the Advanced SEO features of WordPress.
Overall both platforms offer good SEO but WordPress has more flexibility and control over your SEO with advanced features.
Choosing the right platform for your website is a big decision.
While both WordPress and Wix are good platforms, WordPress would be my preferred choice for those seeking customization, scalability, ownership, and advanced SEO capabilities.
The open-source nature of WordPress, coupled with its big community support, positions it as a powerful platform that can adapt to the needs of users.
While Wix may be suitable for beginners or those with simpler requirements.
Businesses and individuals who want a to grow a scalable online presence are likely to find WordPress the better solution for their needs.
